In the late Sixties, Baltimore was still an "organ" town and had its share of great players. It was here that Greg really got a chance to hone his jazz organ skills by playing with the best musicians in town mostly at Lenny Moore’s Sportsman’s Lounge in west Baltimore.

As a teenager, the largely self-taught Hatza met Moore in his Reading, Pennsylvania hometown’s Grand Hotel where he was performing organ player’s jam sessions. Moore asked Greg’s parent’s permission to bring him to Baltimore where he became Hatza’s manager. He performed at the club for four years establishing him as a major jazz performer amongst national jazz artists who came to the city to perform. One major artist, organist jimmy Smith became Greg’s mentor.

Be Mo Jazz

The Be Mo Jazz project, organized by CA-FAM III, Inc.,  is an effort to honor the history, celebrate the presence and ensure the future of jazz music and culture. Baltimore is a perfect city to create such a project because of its rich history of celebrating indigenous music traditions. And the Mid-Atlantic region [PA, DE, MD, DC, VA, NC] is overflowing with musical talent to be both showcased and developed.
